I am a huge Alyssa Milano fan, and I disclose that immediately because that's been true for a long time.
It would be easy for me to simply say I watched "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend" and that it was awesome, strictly because of my bias toward Ms. Milano. But to do that would be a major disservice to the film.
We're all quite used to Hollywood spectaculars these days. It seems so many releases are stories built around the latest special effects technology. I'm not trying to impugn anyone's work, by any means, but "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend" has done something great.
The movie goes back to what movies were probably intended to do all along: entertain and involve the audience. We are given a story, a set of characters and it's off we go. The film meets a very important requisite: we get character development, and it does the job perfectly. Five minutes into the story, we can like and care about the people in the tale, and that allows us to completely immerse ourselves into the story and enjoy it.
There is a great amount of imagination at play here, and I believe Daryn Tufts has done an incredibly good weaving job with the plot twists. If you like Alyssa Milano's work as an actress, you will absolutely fall in love with this performance. Chris Gorham was the absolute perfect choice as her leading man because one could actually believe they would be attracted to each other. Michael Landes plays his part just right: we're rooting against his character, but he's not a bad guy.
I can't say too much more about the movie because there is an intricate story being told here, and any knowledge of the outcome would simply spoil the ride. I don't want to do that to anyone. I give "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend" two, very large thumbs up, (or 5 out of 5 stars, if that's your preference) because it did exactly what I hoped it would do. We got a great story, with a great cast, and not one second gone to waste. In short, we got what we expected from an Alyssa Milano project.
Enjoy.
In the USA, you can download "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend" on iTunes. I highly suggest doing so.

I completely agree with your review, which is very eloquent and well-written, by the way. I had the delight to watch this movie, on a movie-channel, here in the Netherlands last month.
This movie had a subtle brilliance right from the start, the characters are well developed and like/love-able, even the presumed bad guy. That subtle brilliance genius morphes into sheer genius at the end of the movie. I give it two thumbs as well. And recommend it to everyone, Alyssa and/or Christopher fan or not!
Love,
